Tarkovsky’s Words

By Ricky D’Ambrose
Briefly:
Tarkovsky’s film interviews are appropriate companion pieces to his other rumination on the cinema, “Sculpting In Time.” Better yet: Tarkovsky’s ruminations on the cinema are appropriate companions to his films, to the ways he thinks about the medium. Few filmmakers have translated complex components of memory and feeling into a cinematic project of sensations as affectively as Tarkovsky. Zerkalo, Andrei Rublev, Nostalghia – these are films that manage to become experiences; they cause a wide ride range of feelings and ideas (about childhood, about displacement, about longing and memory) to be made palpable. Within the domain of Tarkovsky’s cinema – a cinema that defends itself against insincerity and mediocrity – these feelings also become indelible on screen.
